Brain Crush February 10, 2008

This is what I call the crushes I have on men whom I admire for their intelligence, wit, talent, whatever. Not at all to be confused with the Clooney Crush, which is based on something entirely different.

The Onion A.V. Club recently interviewed John Cleese, one of my top brain crushes. C’mon, how can you not love this guy … one of the funniest men alive, and so smart. Aside from all the Monty Python stuff (which is enough right there to merit my giant crush … helloooo! Life of Brian? The Meaning of Life? … the man is a total genius), he also co-wrote a book with his own therapist called Families and How to Survive Them … it’s somewhere between humor and self-help, and when I read it when I was 20 it was a huge help to me. So not only has Cleese made me laugh hysterically on many occasions, he has also contributed to my overall sanity. Well done there.

There are many others … no post about brain crushes would be complete without giving a shout out to Julian Bond. I won’t even go into the myriad ways this man has recurred in my life … for those of you who don’t know, it would take too long to explain in writing, and those of you who do know … well, you can back me up on this.

True confession time. While there are quite a few men who have earned the title of Brain Crush, one stands out above the rest, and is actually the person around whom I coined the term in the first place. My Top Brain Crush? …

Yep, that’s right. I have a deep and abiding love for Alan Greenspan. The man’s brain drives me wild. This could be more than you ever wanted to know about me, but I couldn’t bring up brain crushes and leave him out.
